I have no idea what I'm doing, but I found a couple utilities. One is called SCSI maker. You can make games like King's Quest V with it. Another is AGI maker. You can make games like the original, non-VGA King's Quest with it.
Both AGI & SCSI were originally made by the computer company Square in their adventure games. Fans have since started making their own games.
The AGI program has sprites from the game Black Cauldron to show off what animations look like. The SCSI program has a template feature that shows you sprites of a character and lets you play a simple "game" where you move him around the screen.
Pretty cool. Or you could download RPG Maker for PC from somewhere...
Another thing I discovered is the New AGI. http://www.agidev.com/projects/nagi/
You use this to play old AGI games on your PC. Very handy if you don't want to fork over the money to buy the Windows XP collections of Larry, Space, Police, or King. Just unzip the contents of NAGI into the same folder as your game and use Nagi to play the game rather than using the default executable (usually "sierra").
