No US Internet Taxes for at least 7 years... Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       Go to the top of this page

WASHINGTON - The Senate on Thursday night approved a seven-year extension of a moratorium on state and local taxes on Internet access.

The Senate voice vote came a little over a week after the House passed a bill calling for a four-year moratorium. The tax ban, first approved in 1998, is set to expire Nov. 1.

Attempts in both the House and Senate to make the ban permanent in recent weeks were unsuccessful despite strong support for the idea.

Sens. Tom Carper, D-Del., and Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., in a joint statement called the agreement "a commonsense victory both for Internet users and for state and local governments."

The two chambers will have to reach a compromise on the length of the ban and other differences before the bill can be sent to the White House for President Bush's signature.

That is really good news considering everything else in our country is taxed. now all we have to do is worry about is global warming and world war III.

I don't get it. Why is it when we get something for free or cheap, those fuck ups in D.C. want us to pay for it. Shit they're taking every penny we have, you think they would give us a break, no they find new ways of taxing us.

7 years is just a dely for somebody to pull some kind of internet stunt. Then Congress is going to say "This will effect the American people and now we have to protect them." Then they're going to call it a "Protection Tax" (I'm not sure what they will call it.)

And before you know it, we will be paying for yet another tax.

You're foolish and should be aware how closely entwined the corporate world and the US gov't are. Even if there won't be an open tax, under the surface there's always honorary tax for most things. The system just wants to remove every idle dime out of your pockets and does as much as possible to achieve this.

I'm foolish how? and what is an honorary tax? Keep in mind I am an accountant and this is what I do for a living.

I think everyone is aware of how corporate america and the US government are entwined, thats not a startling revelation or anything, but thats obviously not who is lobbying for an internet tax.

The more we are taxed, the less we can spend on consumer goods, and corporations use the internet for commerce way more than we do and would be hit by the tax even harder. Thats two reasons why corporate america would have no incentive to be in favor of taxing the internet.

The people who do want to tax the net are local and state governments who are strapped for cash. Their argument is if you download a song from itunes you are technically buying something, and if your state has sales tax you should have to pay a tax on that purchase just like you would if you bought a cd at Best Buy. The problem is the internet blurs lines and wasn't around when the tax laws were created so there is no way to prove for or against their argument (besides just saying I do or do not want to pay more taxes, and obviously no one wants to pay more). Congress put a 7 year hold on the issue to prevent state and local governments from taxing in the meantime. Other taxes such as usage taxes, or email postage tax (which is a fucking joke, since the post office was created to handle the cost of postage not generate revenue) are put on hold too. Hopefully it will end up being a permanent ban, we can only hope.

I think he was directing that "foolish" comment towards me... but what ever the situation is i still believe that they will make the right decision & NOT HAVE ANOTHER BLOODY TAX!!!! especially on the internet... we already pay the the net provider like Bell & Rogers between $20-$30 a month and the government(here in Canada) gets between 7-10% of the profits from that....

No, what's foolish is making a big deal of this when much bigger issues are in order. What I meant by honorary tax is that you get taxed off the table anyways by the system. Government and business are so closely intertwined you might as well call it a tax. I mean sure, you can say the local governments are the ones who want to tax the internet. Big deal, there are obviously people above them with different interests. What about those poor corporations in danger of the internet tax - they want to censor and control the internet for their own interests. Corporations that block more access to internet service technologies because the current setup is more profitable to them, screw the people who'd pay less and get better service.

My point is, from the point of view of the consumer, this internet tax threat is small potatoes. It's little more than a typical political motion of throwing around selective numbers in the open to sway public opinion.

LOL Seriously Satori, I think you are over thinking this. There are obviously bigger issues in order, but I don't think posting stories about the Turkish-Kurdish stand off is relevant to Romnation.net. I just wanted to share a news article that I thought people would find interesting. I don't know what else to tell ya bro.

Why would you have to explain yourself? I'm not questioning you. People post threads and there's comments about it. I posted a comment here. Although I see nothing about Kurds and Turks, it was about the internet like the news article.
