I never really pay attention to reviews, if the game looks good, I'll rent it first; if I don't like it, I won't buy it.
However, I've seen firsthand how GameStop treats their employees. I bought some games yesterday, and this clerk was talking about how this was the third day he had to work without a lunch break, and I recall some employee complaining about a different issue a few months back. He let me use his discount card, and said he didn't care if he got in trouble, because he was probably going to 'do something to get fired anyway.'
This guy was so angry, he remarked that he 'wouldn't care if someone walked out with a bunch of systems and games,' if there weren't a bunch of cameras in there, I probably would have.
And I used to think working in a game store would be a dream job!
~EDIT~ And, I just realized that GameSpot and GameStop are two different companies. Haven't had much sleep since buying those games...

oh, i´m a friend of SOME reviews. i have to know the source as good as possible, i want many DIFFERENT views.
a single review has no meaning to me but if i can see a clear direction from some different platforms, the "facts" sound plausible to me and if i think the information is gathered independent.....why not?
don´t misunderstand me there. i watch for reviews if something wakes my interest. if it doesn´t first at all, i don´t seek for reviews anyway.

it all depends, I tend to read reviews for movies, but not so much games. I agree with the tomatometer on rotten tomatoes about 95% of the time, although it was wrong about Spiderman 3. That was a stinking pile of shit excuse for a movie.
For games though, I tend not to agree with the critics as much, and if I am really skeptical about a game I can always rent it. Even if the critics pan the new Nights game I will definitely get it.
I do think its effed up if this Gamespot thing is true. How can they try and give impartial reviews if they fire people for panning a game they are being paid to advertise? Definitely a conflict of interest...then again, maybe this guy had pushed his last button and was just getting on people's nerves...

I don't pay attention to reviews what so ever most of them get it so wrong i'd prefer to try before i hold judgment some games and movies that u go in thinking suck can really surprise u and turn out really well done, if i need a 2nd opinion i usually go to a forum or someplace with average job opinions most gamers are brutally honest if a game sucks and generally have some pretty good reasons plus there's the flame wars I enjoy a good laugh
But in this case if Eidos really did put pressure on Gamespot to sack Jeff Gerstmann then thats wrong reviewers are supposed to give their opinions good or bad not say a game is the best thing since sliced bread even if its not true

i only look at reviews of a game i never played, or have very little info on, and every1 i talk to says "BUY IT!!!!" ill take a look on forums and then rent it if it seems like an ok game... for example i heard good stuff about King Kong the movie game and tried the demo in the store, i later bought it cos it was good.
Oh and before i forget, HITO, i sent u a Mii, would u be willing to send Mii one of yours?
