no offense, but it'd be nice if they're skilled too.
and i think these people...
1. Joe Satriani
2. Steve Vai
3. Eddie Van Halen
4. Yngwie Malmsteen
5. Walter Giardino (Argentinian)
also play with their passion and belief.
without passion and belief, guitarists are just morons.

well ive only heard of 2 and 3 on your list. but to be fair i dont follow that sort of stuff. i dont consider playin loads of fiddly solos and stuff to be "good" playing. its showing off and self indulgant.

actually thats not my list.
i tried to think of great guitarists but i was lazy so i just copy/paste from Mosquita.
anyway, i know what you mean, i dont really like fast solo too. i dont care how many notes steve vai can play in a second.
i like solo thats melodic like BB.king's blues stuff.

Anyone without Clapton on their list should die. He's legendary no matter who you are or what you like.
Seriously...

4. Vai
5. toss up filler - Yasunori Mitsuda ... he plays everything instrument-wise, but he's some great acoustics on his record.

my 5 would be, in no particular order:
1. Steve Vai
2. John Petrucci
3. Joe Satriani
4. SRV
5. Clapton
Honestly, while I love them, I don't listen to much Clapton or SRV... but I do love SRV's Scuttle Buttin'. That song is crazy!
