This movie is based on an older one called "The 300 Spartans" or something like that. I watched it recently and it followed very accurately Herodotus's acount for a movie. The only letdown was the way the battle itself was filmed, without any knowledge about ancient warfare. Wikipedia says that The 300 Spartans was anti-communist propaganda, but I've seen it and that's 0.000 per cent true, the only message is Pan-Helenic. I guess Miller's movie is less worried about accuracy, but it will surely rock, I'll be watching it tomorrow evening. If you want history read Herodotus, that's what I did many years ago, it could be someone else's cup of tea, not necessarily boring, especially if you skip the description of Egypt. Crying And what HitokiriX said is true.

DOSBox is the best option, especially when there's no other option. Wink It's the best virtual DOS machine out there anyway, and you can use D-Fend to make it more user friendly, or just drag/copy-paste the EXE into the DOSBox executable or shortcut. It's true that it takes a lot of processor power since it emulates a whole machine but for old games that's not a problem, and the latest 0.70 release is very optimized in terms of speed. Sometimes VDMSound will do. Also many DOS games work in Win9X.

EDIT: I've checked and Quake works perfectly in DOSBox, so I don't think speed is a problem for any DOS game. Of course it won't work at any speed for Win9X games, DOSBox is only for DOS, try compatibility mode for those.

And Operation Wolf. The arcade wasn't near home back then but now I've played with Mame and it's a piece of cake.

Shooter, airships named after fishes --serious 01-20-2007 18:44 Forum: Arcade

Hi guys and gals. I can't remember the name of this one, it was the good old airship shooter style although not very old, good graphics. The scrolling was upwards not sidewards. But the most remarkable feature of the game was that the airships you could choose were named after fishes. I'm pretty sure there was a green round one called "scallop", and maybe another one called mackerel, well you get the idea. I've googled to no avail, I don't remember that it be particularly famous but it was cool for me. Big Grin Thanks.

And Elevator Action Returns, I've just done it, but that's very easy --but good game. I think I beat Samurai Shodown IV with on credit the first time I tried, but it's too easy and worse... SS2 will always be my favourite. Big Grin

Mmm no, much newer, far better graphics. And I'm pretty sure about the throwing leaves --which were as big as the hero since he was supposed to be an insect, or an insect-size human in an insect-looking costume--, the shops, etc. Tongue But thanks for trying, keep it coming.

Do You Remember? 09-20-2006 15:32 Forum: Arcade

This should be easy enough, it was an arcade platformer and the hero's starting weapons were throwing leaves. I think those stunned the monsters and then you could grab and throw them or something like that. There were other weapons, such as bombs which killed the monsters outright, and there were shops where you could buy power-ups and stuff. I think that the good guys --the hero and the people in shops etc.-- were insects, or rather they looked like humans in insect costumes; I think the hero's costume was blue.

Any idea about the name? Confused

FOUND IT! Boy, this is great. The name is Kujakuou, try it boys and girls. Looks like there's a sequel for the Genesis/Mega Drive, or so it seems judging by the name. Thank you Khabarakh for your reply.

EDIT: *Ahem* Kujakuou is for those clever Japanese-speakers. For those who are stuck with English like me , the name is different: Spellcaster.

Same old "can't remember the name" 06-15-2006 02:22 Forum: Console Gaming and Emulation

Hi. I played this game in the Sega Master System, although it may exist for other platforms, maybe Genesis/Mega Drive. It was too cool for school, I'll be traumatized forever if I don't ever see it again. Frown

Is was a mix of action and RPG. The action part was kind of platformish, somewhat like Kenseiden, similar atmosphere and enemies including bosses --japanese mythologic and ghostly mambo-jambo--, but the main character was not a sword-wielding samurai, rather a fireball-firing dude wearing trousers and he could jump higher. I think that you could cast special spells apart from the fireball, which was more powerfull if you kept the button pressed. However the "engine" --much of the code-- must be the same for this game and Kenseiden, even the way the guy climbs stairs is similar in both games.

The RPG part displayed a small image of the situation and was managed with menus. Here you could use the special spells which were something like fire, lightning, etc. And of course there were lots of dialogues.

So, any idea? The slightest hint will be appreciated, please say whatever comes to your mind. Thanks guys. Confused
